To assess a demential syndrome, several instruments were used in BASE:
(1) For screening purposes, the short version of the Mini Mental State (Short MMS, Klein et al., 1985; see Literature) was used within the multidisciplinary intake assessment (EE).
(2) Within the intensive protocol (IP, neuropsychological test-session), the Mini Mental State examination (Folstein, 1975; see Literature) was used.
(3) A Dementia score was built from the dementia-related items of Specific Behavior and Speech Scale (see Psychopathology) which was part of the observation protocol. This scale was used by the interviewers to rate whether the participant behaved in an unusual manner.
(4) Additionally, relatives were asked questions related to demential symptoms (Angehörigen-Interview).
(5) Further, the degree of dementia was assessed by (a) the MMS result, (b) the Clinical Dementia Rating scheme (CDR; Hughes et al., 1982; see Literature) and (c) a semi-structured interview conducted with the participant's family doctor (see Physician Interview: Items 49 - 57).

Disorders in cognitive performance were measured as follows:
Memory disorders were assessed by (a) the repetition, recognition, and incidental learning tasks of the Enhanced Cued Recall, 16 items each, (ECR; Grober et al. 1988; see Literature), which is used to detect disorders in memory and speech; and (b) the Complex Figures Reconstruction (KF; Osterrieth, 1944, Read, 1987; see Literature). The KF test detects disorders in memory and constructive apraxia.
Speech disorders were assessed (a) by the naming and pointing tasks of the Enhanced Cued Recall, 16 concrete items each (ECR, Grober et al. 1988; see Literature).
Constructive apraxia was assessed by the Complex Figure Copy task.
Psychomotor slowing was assessed by the Reitan Trail Making test (RTM; Reitan, 1958; see Literature).
